Used Car Test Drive Checklist: What to Check on a Calgary Test Drive

Get the most out of your test drive. Here's the route, the sounds, the feel and the features to check before you buy a used car in Calgary.

Used Car Test Drive Checklist: What to Check on a Calgary Test Drive

The test drive is where you find out if a car is right for you — and whether it has any issues a walk-around won’t reveal. Here’s how to make it count.

Plan a route that reflects real Calgary driving

Try to spend at least 20–30 minutes behind the wheel and cover:

  • Stop-and-go city traffic to test brakes and low-speed shifting
  • A highway merge — a stretch like Deerfoot Trail or Glenmore Trail — to check acceleration and stability at speed
  • A rough or bumpy road to listen for suspension noises
  • A hill to feel how the engine and transmission handle load
  • A parking lot to test tight turns and reversing

Before you pull out

  • Adjust the seat, steering wheel and mirrors. Can you get comfortable?
  • Check visibility — blind spots, rear window and pillars.
  • Start the engine and watch the dashboard. All warning lights should turn off after start-up.
  • Turn the steering wheel lock to lock while stationary and listen for groans.

While driving: what to feel

Acceleration. It should be smooth and consistent, without hesitation.

Transmission. Shifts should be quick and clean. Slipping, clunking or delayed engagement are red flags.

Braking. The car should stop straight, without pulling, pulsing or grinding. Try one firm (safe) stop.

Steering. The car should track straight on a level road. A vibrating wheel at speed can mean tire balance or alignment issues.

Suspension. Over bumps, the car should settle quickly. Clunks or excessive bouncing need a closer look.

While driving: what to listen for

Sound Possible cause
Squeal when braking Worn brake pads
Grinding when braking Pads worn to metal, rotor damage
Clunk over bumps Worn suspension components
Whine that rises with speed Wheel bearing or differential
Clicking on tight turns CV joint wear
Rattle at idle Loose heat shield or exhaust

Turn the radio off for the first part of your drive.

Test the features you’ll actually use

  • Heater and defrost (critical for Calgary winters)
  • Air conditioning (for those hot July afternoons)
  • Heated seats and steering wheel
  • Cruise control
  • Backup camera and parking sensors
  • Bluetooth pairing with your phone
  • AWD or 4WD engagement, if equipped

After the drive

Park, leave the engine running for a minute and check underneath for fresh leaks. Pop the hood and listen again. Then turn it off and take a few minutes to think — how did it feel?

Pair the drive with an inspection

A test drive tells you how the car behaves. Our used car inspection checklist covers what to look for with the engine off.
