Used Car Inspection Checklist for Calgary Buyers
A printable, Calgary-specific checklist for inspecting a used car — exterior, rust, tires, under the hood, interior, electronics and the paperwork to ask for.
A careful inspection is the best protection you have when buying a used car. Every vehicle at All Nicks Auto goes through a rigorous inspection and maintenance process before it’s offered for sale — but we always encourage buyers to look for themselves too. Here’s the checklist we recommend.
Before you go: check the paperwork
- Vehicle history report — accidents, insurance claims, liens and past registrations
- Out-of-province history — vehicles brought into Alberta need an out-of-province inspection before they can be registered here
- Recalls — search the VIN in Transport Canada’s recall database
- Service records — oil changes, brakes, timing belt and transmission service
Exterior
- Walk around in daylight. Look for mismatched paint or uneven panel gaps, which can signal past repairs.
- Check the windshield for chips and cracks — common on Calgary highways thanks to gravel and road sand.
- Open and close every door, the hood and the trunk or tailgate.
- Test all lights: headlights, high beams, brake lights, signals and reverse lights.
Rust: the Calgary factor
Road salt and de-icers used through Calgary winters can be hard on vehicles. Look closely at:
- Wheel wells and rocker panels
- The bottoms of doors and the tailgate
- Brake lines and the exhaust system
- Subframe and suspension mounts (use a flashlight)
Light surface rust on underbody components is common. Bubbling paint, flaking metal or holes are not.
Tires and brakes

| Tread depth | At least 4/32″ (about 3 mm); more for winter driving |
| Wear pattern | Even across the tread — uneven wear can mean alignment issues |
| Tire age | The four-digit DOT code shows week and year; older tires harden |
| Matching set | Same brand and size on each axle |
| Brake rotors | Smooth, not deeply grooved or heavily lipped |
Ask whether a second set of winter tires is included — in Calgary, that’s real value.
Under the hood
- Engine oil: amber to dark brown is normal; milky or gritty is a warning sign
- Coolant: at the correct level, no oily film
- Transmission fluid (where there’s a dipstick): red or pink, not burnt-smelling
- Belts and hoses: no cracks, fraying or bulges
- Battery: clean terminals; Calgary cold snaps are tough on weak batteries
- Block heater: check that the cord is present and undamaged — a must for -30°C mornings
- Leaks: look underneath for fresh drips
Interior
- Smell for mildew or smoke
- Check seat wear against the kilometres shown
- Test the heater, defrost, A/C, heated seats and heated mirrors
- Try every window, lock and mirror
- Check that no warning lights stay on after start-up
- Test the infotainment, Bluetooth, backup camera and USB ports
Start-up and idle
Start the engine cold if possible. Listen for knocking, ticking or squealing, and watch for excessive smoke from the exhaust. The idle should settle smoothly within a minute.
